When you're packing your hospital bag, you might spend ages thinking about what your baby will wear — but what about you?
You don't need a special outfit for labour, and there certainly isn't a "right" thing to wear. The most important thing is to choose something that makes you feel comfortable, relaxed and able to move.
For many mums, that means keeping things simple.
What should I wear during labour?
A loose nightdress, oversized T-shirt or comfortable nightwear can all work well during labour.
Choose something that:
- Is loose and comfortable
- Allows you to move around easily
- Is easy to take off if needed
- You're not worried about getting messy
- Gives your midwife or medical team easy access when needed
You may also find that you want to change what you're wearing as labour progresses. That's completely normal.
Don't worry about packing the perfect outfit — pack a couple of options and see what feels right on the day.
Can I wear a bra during labour?
You can wear a bra during labour if you find it comfortable.
A soft, supportive maternity or nursing bra can be a good option, particularly if you'd prefer a little more support.
If you're planning to use a birthing pool or have a water birth, check with your maternity team about what you're able to wear in the water.
Is a nursing bra useful in hospital?
If you're planning to breastfeed, having a comfortable nursing bra in your hospital bag can be really useful.
You don't necessarily need a whole collection — one or two comfortable nursing bras should be plenty to start with.
Look for something that's:
- Soft and comfortable
- Supportive without feeling restrictive
- Easy to open for breastfeeding
- Flexible enough to accommodate changes in your breast size

What should I wear after giving birth?
Once your baby has arrived, you'll probably want to get into something clean, dry and comfortable.
A soft pair of pyjamas, a loose nightdress or comfortable loungewear can all be good choices.
If you're breastfeeding, front-opening or easy-access nightwear can make those early feeds a little easier.
You'll also want comfortable underwear and maternity pads ready for the days after birth.

What should I wear if I'm having a caesarean?
If you're having a planned caesarean, comfort is particularly important while you're recovering.
Loose clothing and soft, high-waisted maternity briefs can feel more comfortable than anything tight around your tummy.
Choose nightwear and clothes that won't rub against or put unnecessary pressure on your scar.
Your maternity team will give you specific advice about caring for your incision, so always follow their recommendations.
What should I wear home from hospital?
Don't worry about trying to fit back into your pre-pregnancy clothes straight away!
Your tummy will still be changing after birth, so choose something loose, soft and comfortable.
Maternity leggings, loose trousers, joggers, a soft top or an oversized jumper are all easy options.
If you're having a caesarean, make sure your outfit won't sit uncomfortably around your tummy.
And remember, you'll probably be much more interested in getting home with your new baby than worrying about what you're wearing!
