As your bump grows, you may find that your usual underwear becomes less comfortable. Maternity briefs come in two main styles: over the bump and under the bump.
So which should you choose?
The answer is simply whichever feels most comfortable for you.
Over-the-bump maternity briefs
These sit higher on your body and cover your bump.
They can be a good choice if you like extra coverage and enjoy the feeling of fabric gently covering your bump. Look for soft, stretchy fabrics that move with your growing body without feeling restrictive.
Under-the-bump maternity briefs
These sit underneath your bump rather than over it.
They're a good option if you prefer a lighter feel or don't like having fabric over your stomach. They can also feel particularly comfortable as your bump gets bigger.
Which one is best?
Neither style is better than the other. It's completely down to personal preference.
You might even find that you prefer over-the-bump briefs at one stage of pregnancy and under-the-bump styles later on.
The most important thing is that your underwear:
- Feels comfortable
- Doesn't dig into your skin
- Gives your bump enough room
- Is made from soft, breathable fabric
When should I switch to maternity underwear?
There's no set time.
If your usual underwear still feels comfortable, you can carry on wearing it. But if your waistband is digging in, your briefs feel restrictive or you're constantly adjusting them, it's probably time to try a maternity style.
Over the bump or under the bump?
Over the bump: More coverage and fabric over your bump.
Under the bump: A lighter feel with the waistband sitting below your bump.
Try both and see which feels best for you.
Pregnancy is different for everyone, so there's no right or wrong choice - comfort comes first.
