Finding a nursing bra that feels comfortable and supportive can be particularly important if you have a larger bust.
You shouldn't have to choose between support and comfort, and you certainly don't need to settle for a nursing bra that feels frumpy or overly practical.
The right style can give you the support you need while still making you feel good.
Look for a supportive band
A good nursing bra should get much of its support from the band around your body rather than relying entirely on the straps.
The band should feel secure without digging in and should sit comfortably around your ribcage.
If your band rides up at the back, it's worth checking the size and fit.
Wider straps can help
Wider, adjustable straps can be particularly comfortable if you have a fuller bust.
They can help distribute the weight more comfortably across your shoulders.
But don't rely on the straps to provide all the support.
If you're constantly tightening them, the band or overall fit may need reassessing.
Consider the cup shape
Look for cups that comfortably contain your breast tissue without spilling over the top or sides.
A well-fitting cup should feel secure without squeezing you.
Because your breast size can change during breastfeeding, a little flexibility can also be useful.
Wireless doesn't mean unsupported
If you have a larger bust, you might assume you need an underwired nursing bra.
But that's not necessarily true.
There are supportive wireless nursing bras available too, and many women love them for their comfort.
The key is finding a style with good construction and the right fit.
What about underwired nursing bras?
If you prefer an underwired style, there's no reason you can't choose one.
Just make sure the wire sits comfortably around the breast and isn't digging into or pressing against your breast tissue.
A good fit matters far more than simply choosing wired or wireless.
Don't forget comfort
Your nursing bra isn't just going to be worn for an hour or two.
You may be wearing it all day, feeding your baby, carrying your baby and sleeping in it.
So while support is important, comfort matters just as much.
Look for soft fabrics, comfortable straps and easy nursing clips, and choose a style that makes you feel confident too.
