Maternity Bra vs Nursing Bra: What's the Difference?
If you're pregnant and looking for a new bra, you've probably come across both maternity bras and nursing bras.
But what's the difference?
The simple answer is that a maternity bra is designed primarily for comfort and support during pregnancy, while a nursing bra is designed to make breastfeeding easier.
There can be some overlap, though, and you don't necessarily need to buy one type immediately and then replace it with another.
What is a maternity bra?
A maternity bra is designed with your changing body in mind.
During pregnancy, your breasts can change in size and shape, and your usual bras may start to feel uncomfortable. A maternity bra can offer more flexibility and support as your body changes.
Depending on the style, you might find features such as:
- More adjustable fastenings
- Stretchier fabrics
- Flexible cups
- Extra support
- Comfortable, wider straps
The key thing is comfort.
If your normal bra is starting to dig in, feel restrictive or simply doesn't feel right anymore, it may be time to look at a maternity-friendly style.
What is a nursing bra?
A nursing bra is specifically designed to make breastfeeding easier.
Most nursing bras have cups that can be opened or lowered using a clip or fastening, allowing you to feed your baby without having to remove your whole bra.
They come in lots of different styles, from soft wireless bras to more structured and supportive options.
And yes — nursing bras can be pretty too!
There's no reason you have to choose something purely practical just because you're breastfeeding.
Can a maternity bra also be a nursing bra?
Yes, some bras are designed to work throughout both pregnancy and breastfeeding.
This can be a really useful option if you don't want to buy several different bras as your body changes.
Look for a style that gives you enough flexibility during pregnancy while also having the nursing features you'll need later.
This means you can start wearing it during pregnancy and continue using it once your baby arrives.
Which one should I buy during pregnancy?
That depends on where you are in your pregnancy and what you need from your bra.
If you're still pregnant and your usual bras are becoming uncomfortable, a maternity bra may be exactly what you need.
If you're getting closer to your due date and planning to breastfeed, you might prefer a nursing bra that you can continue wearing after your baby arrives.
You don't need to buy a whole new collection straight away, either.
Starting with a couple of comfortable bras and seeing what works for you is often a much better approach than trying to predict exactly what you'll want several months from now.
What about after the baby arrives?
Once you're breastfeeding, the ability to open your bra easily for feeding becomes much more important.
That's where a nursing bra really comes into its own.
You may also find that your preferences change once your baby arrives. Perhaps you love the softness of a wireless bra at first, then decide you prefer something with more support later.
There isn't one right answer.
Your body and your needs can change, so your lingerie can change with them.
So, do I need both?
Not necessarily.
You might choose a maternity bra during pregnancy and then move to nursing bras once your baby arrives.
Or you might choose nursing bras that are comfortable enough to wear throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding.
It really comes down to what feels comfortable and what works for your lifestyle.
If you're unsure, start with one or two good-quality bras rather than buying lots at once. You'll soon discover which styles, fits and levels of support you prefer.
Maternity or nursing bra: which is right for you?
Think about what you need right now.
If you mainly need comfort and support while your body is changing during pregnancy, a maternity bra could be the right choice.
If you're preparing for breastfeeding and want something you can easily open for feeds, a nursing bra is probably the better option.
And if you can find a style that does both? Even better.
The most important thing is choosing lingerie that feels comfortable, supportive and makes you feel good.
